Michigan in desperate need of high school officials and referees
By STEVE KAMINSKI | January 31, 2018 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The number of registered Michigan High School Athletic Association officials has fallen from 12,400 to around 10,000 over the past decade, but this isn’t the drop that concerns Mark Uyl the most. Registration in Michigan has long been defined by economic conditions, and the state was mired in a deep recession in the late 2000s. Folks hurting for a paycheck are more likely to put on a zebra shirt and pick up a whistle during tough economic times. A rebounding economy, however, means that people have rejoined the workforce and no longer need that extra paycheck or just don’t have the time to officiate.
